BIOGRAPHY :

He well knew the northern part of the Bask country, not only because he was a costum officer but also through his aptitude to bertsularism that took him all over the country. The father of eleven children, he emigrated to the United States in his later years. But leaving there his wife and some of his children, Otxalde came back to his native land and began writing down his bertsus. In 1851, he won the first prize in the Floral Games that Antton Abbadia was just starting with his bertsu Kantu berriak Urruneko pilota partidaren sujeten gainean emanak (new songs about the basque pelote match of Urrugne). Later on, he won new prizes as can be seen in the list below :
