Xabier AMURIZA (1941- )

Xabier Amuriza was born in Echano, near to Amorebieta (Biscay).

 After studying theology in Derio, he was ordained priest.

Along with several fellow priests, he locked himself in a church to protest against his hierarchy who too easily accepted Franco’s stifling repression of the Basque people. He was severely punished for this act. He spent six years in a monastery-prison in Zamora, specially opened to punish priests who, according to the Concordat, could not be imprisoned.

Amuriza used this long period to analyse the phenomenon of improvisation and to study how to transform “country” improvisation into a “modern” form of improvisation, capable of attracting young people and successfully entering the 21st century.

When he was released from prison he left priesthood and began to sing in public.
He married in 1980. He has worked as a journalist, a teacher and has been an MP in the Basque regional parliament.  He was imprisoned on two other occasions.

He has written many works, including a number of studies on improvisation which are accepted as an authority.
Amuriza was twice Champion of the Basque Country in 1980 and 1982.

Aita nuen nik umoretsua, inoiz geza ta gazia,
Harek agertu zidan bidea, baitzen bertsoz ikasia ;
Oi ene aita, nire egunak ere aurrera doaz ia,
Baina zugandik hartua baitut bertsotarako grazia,
Nik egingo dut arbola haundi zuk emandako hazia !
