From Fernando Amezketarra to Andoni Egaña

The province of Gipuzkoa is by far the province which has given rise to the greatest number of bertsularis, including Fernando Amezketarra (1764-1823), who is the first we know of.

Pastor Izuela was one of the first to sell his verses transcribed on loose sheets. We must also however mention the great figures of  Xenpelar, Iparragirre, Bilintx, Pello Errota, Txirrita, Uztapide, Basarri.

There were at least three bertsularis in the Otaño family from Zizurkil and when Pedro-Mari left for America for the third time several hundred people gathered at the port in Pasajes to listen to his last verses and express their gratitude.

We should also mention Koxe Lizaso, Lazkano, Mitxelena, Lasarte, Aguirre, Lazkao Txiki, Garmendia and Gorotxategi who, after the Spanish Civil War defied censorship and performed with the inseparable duo Basarri and Uztapide.

Since 1980 we have seen a whole generation of brilliant improvisers: Sebastian Lizaso, Anjel Mari Peñagarikano, Iñaki Murua, Mikel Mendizabal, Andoni Egaña (3 times champion), Aitor Mendiluze, Jexux Mari Irazu, Jon Maia, Jokin Sorozabal and many others.

Amongst all these men, only one woman has managed to become a top level improviser: the young Maialen Lujambio, from Hernani.

She was second in the Basque Country General Championship in 2001 and she was third in 2005.
