From the troubadours to the present championship

We have to go as far back as the 13th century and the House of Champagne on the throne of the Kingdom of Navarre to find evidence of a certain form of improvisation.

Thibault IV, Count of Champagne, who became Thibault I King of Navarre in 1234, on the death of his uncle Sancho the Strong, was also a troubadour poet.

He was a great patron of improvisation and was especially fond of the troubadours. Without a doubt he contributed to the development of this art despite the enormous gap that existed between the Court of the Kingdom of Navarre and the lower classes.

However, we have to jump forward several centuries in the history of this province which gave rise to the Basque Country before we find the name of famous bertsularis.

In the 19th century, several names appeared: Pudes Zaharra, Albitxuarra and Juan Etxamendi, who was better known by his nickname, "Borddel".

Xavier Silveira (XDZ)

Four other improvisers marked the period between 1876 and 1935: Jokin Naparra, Paulo Yantzi, Etxarte and Maritorena. Between 1935 and 1968 Zabaleta, Arozamena, Nabarte, Perurena and many others travelled namely to the Baztan Valley.

A special effort was made in the 1970’s to revive competitions and thanks firstly to the ‘‘Paulo Yantzi Prize’’ then the "Navarrese Bertsolari Championship", several bertsularis made a name for themselves such as the Madariaga brothers, Koxe-Migel and Koxe-Fermin Arginarena, Mikel Taberna, Lontxo Aburiza, Manolo Arozena, etc.

Eztitxu Arozena

Over the last few years, Bittor Elizagoyen, Eztitxu Arozena, Oskar Estanga, Iñigo Ibarra and Jon Barberena have been the most in demand; the current champion is Xabier Silveira, whose parents are Portuguese.
