The accursed poet and the rest

Soule has also had its improvisers and by no means any less.

In the 18th century, Beñat Mardo wrote at least three songs which today are still famous. Unfortunately we do not know his date of birth or when he died!

It is also worth mentioning that in his verse Mardo refers to the name of Museña, another bertsulari who lived during the same period. Both were form Barcus.

Pierre Topet- Etxahun (1786-1862) was from the same village and was nicknamed the "accursed poet".  He is the most widely sung improviser in the Basque Country. A legendary character, his verses are full of virulence.

Louis Ligueix from Larrau, who died at an early age, was very different. Gentle and affable, his songs published in "Kantuz, kanta, kantore" show the purity of his style.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ohitx and Borthiri-Sala still improvised in Soule. Pierre Bordaçarre-Etxahun (1905-1979) from Trois-Villes wrote fourteen pastorales and many songs.  He was also an improviser.

Even though at present there are no bertsularis capable of spontaneously improvising, since 2001 a competition of written verse is held each year within the framework of the Music Festival organised in May in Ordiarp.
